“THE PROPOSAL | Jack proposed on our 3 year anniversary in Regent’s Park in front of Triton Fountain. It was an abandoned spring evening and it was beautiful. The ring was a thin gold band with an uncut/rough diamond. Perfect.
THE VISION | Festival/home-made/rustic.
THE PLANNING PROCESS | We new that we just wanted an empty space that we could fill with beautiful things.
BUDGET | £7500
THE VENUE | The ceremony was in a beautiful building in Bury St Edmunds town centre – The Unitarian Meeting House. Megan had always dreamed of getting married there so that was a given. The reception was in Troston Village Hall. Megan’s mum grew up in Troston and their village hall is just beautiful – small – but beautiful. But they have a gorgeous walled garden. So we opted for an outside wedding. We hired a tipi for the bar so if it did rain you could at least shelter in there.
THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | Megan’s dress was from ASOS and only cost £150. The shoes were from a small boutique in Bury St Edmunds. The belt is from Anthropologie and nearly cost as much as the dress!
FINDING THE DRESS | Megan knew she wanted something that she could never get away with wearing again, and something different from what you would traditionally consider a wedding dress. As soon as she saw it online she had to have it, but it was sold out! She looked everyday until one came back in stock and eventually got hold of one about a month before the wedding (after having already bought another from Monsoon!)
GROOM’S ATTIRE | Jack wore a replica pair of chinos that he wears everyday for work, just because they are such a nice fit, again, from ASOS. His blazer and shirt are both from Ted Baker, and his tie from John Lewis, and the Best Man, MC and Father of the Bride had the same tie in a contrasting colour.
THE READINGS & MUSIC | When we planned the readings we knew we didn’t want to have things which told you what love was or how to love. We didn’t want to preach to people. So we chose a lovely poem about owning a dog, which was very funny, read by Jack’s mum, and Megan’s mum read the song lyrics to our first dance.
Music is one of our passions, we love it. We set up a request page on our wedding website so that people could request some songs and then Jack spent hours pre-mixing the music to perfection. We had all of our favourites, some oldies and some classics. We chose the aisle song as it is quite rare and we knew it would make a statement. It was a cover of Beyonce – Crazy In Love but by an artist called Boots, it is slow and punchy and the drop made the perfect time for Megan to enter.
BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | Megan’s bridesmaid was Jack’s niece Sophie and her Maid of Honour her best friend Naomi. They both wore handmade dresses by Megan’s mum. They had different, but complimentary dresses as they are just such different people and we wanted them to be special to them. Naomi’s dress was made very last minute as her bump was growing so fast!
THE FLOWERS | We ordered the flowers from a wholesaler and made the bouquets and buttonholes ourselves and then used the malt cans from the home-brew as vases and dotted the rest of the flowers around the ceremony and the reception in those. The buttonholes were a mission as we have such a big family. I think we made 20 in total! We put little scrabble tiles with the persons initial on them to make them more personal – and we love scrabble!
THE CAKE | Megan made the cake the night before the wedding and put it together on the day. We had little Lego toppers as we thought they were super cute and we wanted it to be different. We had a Victoria sponge with strawberries, white chocolate and fresh cream as it is Jack’s favourite. Funny story about the cake is that Megan’s little brother Sam and Naomi’s husband Sean took the cake to the reception the morning of the wedding but they forgot the key so they – and the cake – had to climb through the window to get it inside!
YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | Him and Her Wedding Photography – they were amazing. They new exactly what we wanted and were efficient, kind and friendly. They fit in so well with our group of friends that it just seemed like they were guests rather than someone we had hired. They took beautiful, natural shots and they recorded the day perfectly.
THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | We wanted everything that the wedding was to be about us. Jack brewed all of the beer we served and we made batches of cocktails and put them in huge kilner jars. Megan made almost everything, the decorations, the invitations and orders of service (she even punched thousands of small hearts for confetti), finishing touches, the bouquets and buttonholes, the corn hole game, the giant J + M, the cakes, the canapés, the children colouring sheets and clipboards. Megan’s mum made everything that was to do with fabric, including the bridesmaids dresses and the bunting.
We also chose food trucks instead of sit down meal so we had a more laid back vibe. The trucks were amazing and so friendly and it was so fun to queue up and get your food. It was so much better value and it tasted amazing!
THE HONEYMOON | We travelled around South America for 5 weeks, with a final 5 days in Aruba. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity and was the perfect honeymoon. Both of us had dreamed of doing it our whole lives and it was so fitting.
MEMORABLE MOMENTS | Everyone taking photographs for the guest book, everyone’s silly poses, the laughter and smiles – it was magical.
Our vows, we wrote them ourselves separately, but they were so in sync they were almost the same, it was so perfect. Everyone cried and laughed and it was such a special moment.
ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Write your own vows. It was stressful and took time, but it was so special being able to say exactly what you wanted and needed to say to each other – it was magical.
Don’t take too much on – don’t be afraid to let your friends help, or ask for help, there will be a chance for you to repay the favour.
