Meg and Sam Summer wedding at Bruisyard Hall

Meghan and Sam held one of the most fun and relaxed weddings we've ever been to at Bruisyard Hall last Summer, which makes sense because they're super fun... and well, relaxed. If you're looking for tips on how to plan a wedding with minimal stress and keeping things fun, read how Meg and Sam planned their wedding below.

(There were so many pictures we wanted to include we thought it would be easier to make a video.... ta da! This is best with sound.)

What was your vision for your wedding day?

We didn’t have a fixed idea in mind! All we knew was that we wanted somewhere big enough for all of our family and friends to stay, and when we stepped in through the door at Bruisyard Hall we knew we had to get married there.

Tell us a little bit about the planning process for your wedding

We’re not very good planners and because neither of us had any particular things we wanted (apart from a sweet table because Sam is addicted to Haribo) we just decided things as we went along. It’s a small wonder we actually managed to make it through the day without a major incident! We started planning about a year before, and tried to find somewhere that could provide most of what we needed as part of the venue. We didn’t want anything too formal, and we know that planning a wedding can be really stressful so we took a relaxed approach and ended up finding the planning process really fun!

Finding the dress

Meg: I went to about four different bridal shops with my bridesmaids and my Mum, and I tried on lots of different dresses! I actually liked a lot of them so found it really hard to choose. However, I ended up buying the first one I saw! I knew I wanted something a little bit different and not too traditional. I really liked the lace and open back  and felt really comfortable in it which is really important!

Groom’s attire

Sam: I had a vague idea based around not wanting to be too formal, and given it was going to be August I thought a waistcoat would help the Groomsmen and I to avoid spending the day as a sweaty mess. We all went to Norwich and, although we did look in probably upwards of three shops, we got the first one we saw (strangely similar to Meg’s story, funny we get on so well isn’t it?). About two months later I found some trousers to match, oddly enough from the same shop… to finish off the outfit we went with ties for the groomsmen and a bow tie for Ethan (my pageboy) and I because we’re much cooler than the others.

Tell us about how you styled your wedding

You might see a theme here but we didn’t have anything particular in mind! Sam’s Mum and Dad are wonderful gardeners and grew acres (possible exaggeration) of wildflowers for us, and we just made up jars of these ourselves and our family and friends helped put them all around the barn for the wedding. We also got some wooden centrepieces made and added some candles along with the scratch card favours. The venue was beautiful as it was so didn’t require too many extras. It looked alright in the end though, didn’t it?

What was your most memorable moment of the wedding?

Sam: I remember and love every single moment, but I think walking out through a procession of our friends and family while they gregariously whooped and threw confetti in my eyes was my favourite. It summed up the day, everyone was there to celebrate us and our marriage, and we all had a really good time.

Meg: Surprisingly the ceremony! I thought I would be really nervous in front of all those people and want it to be over as soon as possible! However, it was one of my favourite moments of the day. It felt really special and we had two amazing personalised readings from our close friend Lois and our Nieces and Nephew.

What made you laugh on the day?

Sam: I think I laughed from start to finish, it really was the best time I’ve ever had. However, particular mention goes to the DJ playing the wrong first dance song. I was happy to go with it and freestyle but luckily my sister in laws saved the day by letting the DJ know and even caused a dramatic distraction by toppling into the crowd (picture of this is mandatory…)

Meg: Probably my dad’s embarrassing speech! Oh and the Magic Mike dance I got from all my hens at the evening reception!

What made you cry?

The years of crippling debt we have in front of us, although it was all worth it. On the day, our hearts did strain a little when our nieces and nephew got up in front of all of the guests to do a reading for us. It was extremely sweet, especially considering that they are normally tormenting us! We also lost someone dear to us earlier that year and we did a few things on the day to remember them, which are captured in some of the pictures.

What’s your favourite photo from your wedding day and why?

Either the one outside the old shed which is now on our bedroom wall, or one where Sam is being blinded with confetti because it always makes us laugh!

Advice for other couples

Remember that it is all about you, don’t be nervous about anything as you are surrounded by your nearest and dearest and they just want to see you happy. Make sure you take time out to yourselves in the day, it flies by.

The honeymoon

We were incredibly lucky to receive very generous gifts from our friends and family, and went to Bali. It was absolutely wonderful, despite the active volcano being potentially problematic… luckily it behaved and we had the holiday of a lifetime in a private villa with our own butler! In between topping up our tans, we visited temples, beautiful beaches, the volcanoes, rice paddies, and even drank some coffee that a mongoose had pooed out… what more could you want from a honeymoon?

Credit where credit is due

First and foremost to Lisa and Neil, we’re unbelievably grateful for the wonderful photos we have which now adorn every surface of our house… they are worth their weight in gold.

Of course to Bruisyard Hall, particularly Serena who made everything so easy and was as relaxed as us about the whole process, and the catering staff for their support and delicious food.

Thanks to Richard at Squeezed Limes for his photobooth, we all enjoyed it so much (although not sure if Richard enjoyed seeing some of the things that happened in that box…) ((not like that)).

Thanks of course also to Jeremy Durrant our DJ, who saved the day at the last minute (Sam had thought until about two days beforehand that he could work out the music on his phone) and provided a great soundtrack to a great night.

Also to Sophia Weddings and Becky and the team at Heavenly Hair for the lovely make up and hair.

Big shout out to Sian for the ingenious LP centrepieces and seating plan... Eagles ROCK!

Last but not least to our friends and family, and all those that came, for making it such a bloody good time... We wish we could do it all over again

"Lisa and Neil were unbelievably supportive and accommodating from the moment we met them. They helped make our wedding day even more special, and put us at ease throughout. As for the photos themselves, we were truly blown away and they have perfectly captured every aspect of the most important day of our lives. We would recommend without hesitation" - Meghan and Sam
